Só acordar com um café não é fisiológico. Deveríamos acordar descansados, com energia, sem a necessidade de um estimulante. Portanto, nestes casos a glândula adrenal já não está a funcionar bem.

Existem 2 Tipos de insónia:

1. Acordar de madrugada: o que indica excesso de cortisol, hormona do stresse.

2. Dificuldade em adormecer: está relacionado com o excesso de adrenalina e falta de melatonina.

Se acordar de madrugada, o cortisol está alto à noite, o que indica estados de preocupação, ansiedade, nervosismo e que não está respeitando o ciclo circadiano como deveria. Devemos nos expor ao sol pela manhã e olhar para o céu assim que acordar para deixar a luz entrar pela nossa retina. Isso enviará uma sinalização ao nosso cérebro para avisar que é dia, aumentando nosso cortisol na hora correta. 

A melhor forma de reduzir nosso cortisol é através da meditação, oração e terapias como acupuntura, yoga e reiki.

No entanto, se o seu problema é para iniciar o sono, deve-se evitar estar até tarde assistindo séries e noticiários na televisão, mexer no telemóvel antes de dormir, trabalhar até tarde na frente do computador, jantar muito tarde, beber café ou chás estimulantes ricos em cafeína à tarde ou à noite.

Os medicamentos para o sono, não são uma solução. Existem evidências preocupantes sobre o uso de medicamentos que prometem um sono rápido.
